Golden Gate Transit Bus Accessible Services

All Golden Gate Transit (GGT) bus service is operated with lift-equipped buses that have a "kneeling feature" to make boarding easier. Any passenger may request to use the lift or kneeling feature on the bus. Not all GGT bus stops are accessible to wheelchairs. Persons requiring special assistance are encouraged to arrange for a companion to ride with them. GGT provides training in boarding, exiting, and wheelchair securement procedures on GGT buses. Please call Bus Safety and Training at 415/257-4480 at least two days in advance to schedule an appointment.

Before boarding, please have your fare and identification ready. If you cannot reach the farebox or have difficulty handling money, we recommend that you get an RTC Clipper card to pay your fare. Clipper card readers are located at the front and rear doors of the bus. When you board, tell the driver your destination and if you would like your stop announced. While on the lift platform, brakes on wheelchairs should always be locked and chair power turned off. If the operator is unable to secure your wheelchair, you have the option of waiting for the next bus. If your wheelchair is difficult to secure, call 415-257-4480 to request free supplementary straps to attach to your chair. Anyone may transfer from a wheelchair to a passenger seat. This is recommended for three-wheeled mobility cart (“mobie”) users as these devices are not designed for use as seats in vehicles.

Bus identifier kits are available for passengers who have sight, hearing, or speech communication disabilities. The kit is designed to signal bus operators with the route number you wish to travel. Contact Golden Gate Transit to request a kit.

Priority Seating on GGT Buses. Certain seats on the bus are designated as priority seating for passengers with disabilities and for seniors. The bus driver may ask a non-disabled passenger who is occupying a priority seat to move if a passenger with disabilities or a senior boards. Priority seats located in wheelchair securement areas MUST be relinquished. Passenger cooperation in honoring such requests is appreciated.

Electronic Personal Assistive Mobility Devices (EPAMD). GGT has an official policy on the use of EPAMDs on its buses. A common EPAMD is the self-balancing transportation device known as a "Segway." The policy establishes guidelines and instructs how Segways and other EPAMDs are to be accommodated on GGT buses, including those in operation on regional service and local Marin service.

Bus Stop Announcements. The Department of Transportation (DOT) Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) regulations in 49 CFR (Code of Federal Regulations) sections 37.167(b) and (c) require that stop announcements must be made on fixed route systems. Therefore, announcements will be made at transfer points with other fixed routes, major intersections, and destination points, and intervals along a route to permit individuals with visual impairments or other disabilities to be oriented to their location. On request of an individual with a disability, any stop will be announced. Announcements will also be made to help an individual with a visual impairment or other disability to identify the proper vehicle to enter or be identified to the vehicle operator as a person seeking a ride on a particular route.

Golden Gate Ferry Accessible Services

All Golden Gate Ferries vessels are accessible to passengers using wheelchairs and all have accessible restrooms. When traveling between Larkspur and San Francisco, wheelchair users do not need to use the wheelchair lifts, as inter-deck movement is not required to load and unload.

When traveling between the following locations, wheelchair users use the wheelchair lift to load/unload on separate decks. Wheelchair lifts can accommodate a wheelchair up to 30" wide by 41" long and a total weight not exceeding 495 lbs, and may be operated only by crew members.

  • Sausalito to San Francisco: enter on Main Deck, take the lift up one level to exit in San Francisco.
  • San Francsico to Sausalito: enter on Upper Deck, take the lift down one level to exit in Sausalito.
  • Tiburon to San Francisco: enter on Main Deck, take the lift up one level to exit in San Francisco.
  • San Francsico to Tiburon: enter on Upper Deck, take the lift down one level to exit in Tiburon.
  • Larkspur to AT&T Park: enter through main ramp and take the lift down one level to exit at AT&T Park.
  • AT&T Park to Larkspur: enter on Main Deck and take the lift up one level to exit in Larkspur.

Paratransit Services

Intercounty paratransit service is provided in compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 (ADA) for ADA-eligible passengers. Intercounty service (travel between counties) is operated by Whistlestop Wheels and is designed to complement GGT's intercounty non-commute bus service. This service operates between Marin, Contra Costa, San Francisco, and Sonoma counties within three-quarters of a mile of GGT's basic bus routes. Fares are charged and reservations are required.
